Orangeries Installed in the Telford area

Do you need a little more living space? Kobmat Developments can extend your living space by adding a stylish new orangery. An orangery offers an elegant alternative to a traditional extension or conservatory. Orangeries are becoming more popular, but many people are unsure about what they are and how they differ from a conservatory.

What is an orangery?

Dating back to the 17th century, the typical orangery would usually be found on wealthy estates. They were used as the name suggests, to grow citrus trees that require both warmth and lots of light. Over the decades, international travel and cargo shipping became more accessible and it was much easier and cheaper to get citrus fruit so the function of an orangery changed.

Orangeries evolved into stylish living spaces as well as a place to grow exotic plants and vegetables. Today, many homeowners enjoy the increased living space, style, and convenience that a modern orangery adds to their property.

These rooms are quick to build and provide a lovely view of the garden. To take a look at our extensive range of orangery designs and to see how it could enhance your property, give us a call. For a limited time, we are offering a free 3D visualisation of your orangery so you can see how it will look and function as an addition to your home.

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

The key differences between an orangery and a conservatory are the walls and roof. An orangery has low brick-built walls with approximately ¾ glazing and a flat roof with a large central roof lantern. They are usually square or rectangular and modern orangeries have folding doors.

In contrast, a conservatory tends to have fully glazed walls, usually with a pitched roof that connects to one wall of the property. The frame runs from the base to the roof and conservatories come in a variety of shapes. An orangery is a more substantial building generally and will be more expensive than a conservatory.

At Kobmat, we are experienced in designing and building orangeries. A well-designed orangery should look like it has always been there. Internally there will be heating and lighting making a very flexible living space that can be used as a kitchen, lounge, or dining room all benefiting from a view of the outdoors.

An orangery can be even more energy-efficient than a traditional extension. The flat part of the roof is insulated and with a large amount of light coming through the glazing, there will be a greenhouse effect warming the room in winter.

To keep your room cool in summer, there needs to be adequate ventilation in the roof and there is the option of high-tech glass which can block both heat and UV-light from the sun.
